13:19. The steering mechanism - general information, removal, capital repairs and installation
General information
On the Citroyon Xantia cars the steering mechanism of rack type which, depending on a model complete set, can be equipped by the hydraulic booster is used.
The executive cylinder of system of hydrostrengthening of a wheel is installed between the case of rack transfer and steering draft.

Removal

The divider of spherical support, new nuts of spherical fingers of hinges of steering drafts and new coupling bolt of fastening of an intermediate shaft of a steering column to a driving gear wheel of rack transfer will be required. On the models equipped with the power steering also new sealing elements of nipple sockets of hydraulic tubes will be required. |

1. On the models equipped with system of hydrostrengthening of a wheel dump pressure in hydraulic system (see the Head Uniform hydraulic system), then turn a steering wheel from an emphasis against the stop for the purpose of depletion of the executive cylinder of a hydraulic actuator.
2. Prop up antiretractable boots back wheels, then a front of the car and establish to a poddomkratta it on props. Remove forward wheels.
3. Make sure that naves of forward wheels are developed in rectilinear situation. |

4. On models with the manual drive of the steering mechanism disunite spherical hinges of fastening of three drafts of the drive of gear shifting. |
|
|
5. On the models equipped with system of hydrostrengthening of a wheel release nipple sockets and disconnect hydraulic tubes from a case of rack transfer. At once to a zakuporta the open ends of tubes and reception unions of the steering mechanism for the purpose of prevention of hit in system of dirt. |
|
6. From one of boards of the car weaken and partially turn off a nut of a spherical finger of the hinge of fastening of steering draft on stupichny assembly. By means of a divider of spherical support release a finger from the reception nest, then finally turn off a nut. |

|
7. Repeat the procedure of division of the spherical hinge for the second steering draft from an opposite board of the car.
8. Remove thermofilters from assembly of the steering mechanism.
9. Under the car give a nut of a coupling bolt of fastening of an intermediate shaft of a steering column to a driving gear wheel of rack transfer (see
the illustration Fastening of an Intermediate Shaft of a steering column to a driving gear wheel of rack transfer). At the corresponding complete set shift a fixing collar aside and disconnect a shaft from a gear wheel. |

10. Turn out two bolts of fastening of a case of rack transfer to a stretcher. Remove the remote plugs / washers installed between a stretcher and support of the steering mechanism (try to remember their landing situation) (see an illustration — the mechanism support with the manual drive is shown). |

11. Carefully take assembly of the steering mechanism from under the right board of the car. |
|
Capital repairs
|
|
|
1. Attentively examine assembly of the steering mechanism on existence of signs of wear and mechanical damages. Check freedom of movement to a lath in all range of its course: the lath has to move without breakthroughs and an excessive side play). Capital repairs of rack transfer demand from the performer of high qualification and his performance has to be entrusted to specialists of car service. The only components which replacement can be made by the amateur mechanic's forces are tips of steering drafts (see Removal and installation of tips of steering drafts).
2. On the models equipped with system of hydrostrengthening of a wheel examine all nipple sockets of hydraulic tubes on existence of traces of leaks. Make sure of reliability of tightening of cap nipple nuts. Also examine the executive cylinder of the steering amplifier on existence of signs of development of leaks. In case of need replace the failed components. |

Installation
Installation is made upside-down. Pay attention to the next moments:
a) Before installation of the steering mechanism on the car center the provision of a gear lath, having brought it into the situation answering to the rectilinear provision of the operated wheels;
b) Track correctness of installation of remote plugs / washers of support of fastening of the steering mechanism on a stretcher. Do not forget to put washers under heads of fixing bolts;
c) For fastening of spherical fingers of tips of steering drafts use new nuts. Replace also a nut of a coupling bolt of the cardan hinge of a steering shaft;
d) On the models equipped with system of hydrostrengthening of a wheel replace sealing elements of nipple sockets of connection to a case of rack transfer of hydraulic tubes;
e) Track that the steering wheel and a lath of the steering mechanism held positions. Answering to a rectilinear arrangement of the operated car wheels, only after it start fastening of an intermediate shaft to a driving gear wheel of rack transfer;
f) On the models equipped with system of hydrostrengthening of a wheel after lowering of the car on the earth do not forget to tighten spuskny the gate of the regulator of pressure and will move a control lever a suspension bracket in situation "Maximum";
g) In conclusion check adjustment of angles of installation of forward wheels (see
