4.3.2. Removal of the power unit - methods and precautionary measures
Before starting dismantle of the power unit for the purpose of performance of capital repairs of the engine, it is necessary to take some preparatory measures.
Existence and the equipment of the suitable working platform on which there has to be enough place for placement of the car, a strong workbench / the assembly stand, and also necessary materials and the equipment is of extremely great importance. An optimal variant is the big garage or the covered workshop. As a last resort will be just flat platform with an asphalt or concrete covering enough.
Before starting dismantle of the power unit, clean a motor compartment and the external surface of the engine that will help to keep the used tool with purity and an order.
Necessary condition of successful work is also existence of the winch, the And-shaped frame or other suitable lifting equipment. Track that the equipment and a rigging corresponded according to the load-lifting characteristics to the total mass of the power unit (the engine with transmission). Do not forget about need of strict observance of requirements of safety regulations.
If extraction of the engine is made by the amateur mechanic for the first time, it is necessary to get support of the assistant. Useful will be given council of more skilled mechanic in time. In the course of extraction of the unit from a motive compartment there is a set of situations when several procedures have to be performed at the same time that cannot be made by forces of one person.
Try to plan all details of the forthcoming work in advance. Prepare necessary tools and the equipment. To number of the special devices significantly facilitating performance of the forthcoming works and considerably increasing the level of their safety, the powerful cart jack, a complete set of wrenches and replaceable face heads with suitable (it is desirable ratchet) the drive, pair of strong wooden blocks, and also enough rags and solvent for removal of traces of the spilled fuel, oil and cooling liquid belong. At absence in private use of the lifting equipment before hiring the winch, try to perform all necessary preparatory work as much as possible to reduce the rent term and consequently, and the material inputs connected with it.
Prepare for refusal of use of the car for the period of carrying out repair work. Performance of a part of the procedures demanding high qualification of personnel and use of the special equipment should be charged to specialists of car service. Remember that automobile repair shops usually have very busy schedule of loading, and therefore it will be reasonable to see to it and in advance to agree with personnel about implementation of your order.
